Official transfer

I'm sorry to say this, but I have made the official transfer of my blog to sadamson.wordpress.com.  I know, I know, right when I started building a fan base, but this new site so friggin sweet I just can't deny it.  But thanks to msn for hosting my blog until now, you have done well.  There are many great features, but just no adaptability/personalizability.  I'm sorry.  So I hope to see you soon at my new domain!

Crazywickedawesome

I think it's safe to say I'm feeling quite a bit better today.  I slept a whopping 11 hours last night!  Not like I haven't been getting enough either with pretty much 10 hours every night.  I didn't ride today either though.  But I am 99% sure I'm giong to race on Wednesday.  I've also spent a lot of time on Kyle's computer today--I've been working on a new wickedawesomesweet blog/website.  After I saw Greg's new website, I knew there was way better out there.  There are so many amazing features on msn spaces, but it is so unadaptable, so I'm going to try this one out.  I'll probably keep posting on here until I know that I can completely perfect my other blog.  That's pretty much all I have to say for today.

Oh, and I thought I might add that if I wasn't here, I would be starting school today... haha, suckers!  Hope you're all doing good.  I miss you lots!

  • 19 DAYS TIL WORLDS!!!

Sick! Dang!

Sorry to disappoint you guys, but I won't be racing tomorrow.  I've fallen sick and haven't done anything at all today.  I feel like poo.  I was kind of feeling it since Friday, but it wasn't anything to worry about, but then Kyle didn't feel good yesterday and Tara started feeling it today.  It really sucks!  But I guess at least it's not Worlds this weekend or anything...  Hope I feel better soon and can race on Wednesday!

I'd also like to add that it was all the European Nationals' today and champions include:

Belgium - Bart Wellens
Beglium U23 - Neils Albert
Swiss - Christian Heule
Dutch - Lars Boom

Crazy eh!  The Belgian course was friggin nuts and half of it wasn't even rideable.

Good ridin'

I had a pretty good ride today in the rain.  Well I guess it was more like drizzle, but it was hard enough that I wanted to put my rain cape on.  I also had first real hard intervals since I've been here, which was nice.  I was supposed to do more tomorrow, but I think I'm going to take it easy because I got into the Otegem race on Monday.  And I've also been confirmed for Scheldecross on Wednesday.  Sweet!  Now I feel better, lots of racing coming up and then some good taper time.  I think this should work out perfect.

Now I just have to figure out my road season from here.  I'm hoping I can pull it off and turn it into a wicked road season like Hopping did last year!  I'm sure it will work out.  Have a good one.

Notta Lotta

There hasn't been a lot going on here lately.  It's been kind of relaxing.  The typical day right now involves getting (usually around 8:30 for me), eating breakfast, sitting around for a bit and checking the emails we got overnight, then slowly making our way into some riding clothes, doing our workout, coming home and eating lunch.  Sometimes we'll stop by the bakery.  Then the rest of the day is doing whatever, maybe working on bikes, watching tv, sitting on the computer, whatever... until dinner.  Then we'll relax a little more, and we've been watching movies, then it's bedtime.  Ahhh, this is the life!

Anyhoo, just wanted to let you know what we've been up to recently.  Not a lot.

And thanks again to everyone who has donated to our cause through cyclocrossontario.  It really helps and is really motivating!

22 DAYS TIL WORLDS!!!!

Thanks cyclocrossontario.com

Well I don't have a whole lot to say now. We've had a pretty slack day. It's kind of nice to have a little break from racing and take some time to just chill. Oh and clean bikes... My fridge is stocked again and all is good.

I just want to say that the guys at cyclocrossontario.com are awesome! When they found out that this trip was entirely self-funded they set up a program for people to donate to our cause. Wicked! So feel free to check it out and donate!

But it's off to do some more sitting around doing nothing now!

Mud and Pee in Sint-Niklaas

Hahaha, I'm so punny! I mean, funny...

Well yesterday I went to race in Sint-Niklaas. Jos was able to drive me and Greg again, which was really nice. It was raining pretty good as we were driving there and when we parked we all just sat in the car for a while. Eventually I had to get out to use the washroom and to sign in. I knew I was getting start money but I don't think I really believed it until it was actually in my hands. 25 euros... but I was getting paid to race! It had kind of been raining of and on, but it was pretty decent for the start.

The course was really muddy and flat, a couple running sections, a beach section, a tough off-camber section. I really liked it. I think I might just like everything over here. I had a decent start. All the Lotto-Predictor guys were there showing off their new kits and pushed me up a couple spots. I was in the middle more than at Diegem, but I had no problems and I think I was able to be more aggressive. I felt really good, like I was able to make up lots of spots for most of the first lap. I had trouble with some sections, especially where it was more of a slog with just power getting you through it. Once it spread out I was pretty comfortable and just riding though. Same thing, I felt good technically but not so good power-wise. I have a big break to work that much out though. It was also cool to be riding with Johan Van Summeren, I think that's the only time I'll ever be able to say I rode with Protour rider! He was pretty much just joking around, but man, was he bad technically! My bike was getting really dirty and I wanted to change but I couldn't find Ryan until the 4th lap and by the time I came around on the 5th lap, I was lapped, so it didn't really matter. Oh well. I finished 5/8 laps, not that great I guess, but I had fun, and still got 45 minutes of pretty good racing in! I ended up 43/64 starters too.

And then I got called for doping control... what a waste that was. I guess I hope I'm not taking anything illegal that I don't know about. It was my first time to doping control and it's very extensive and interesting. I was also there first out of the ten so I didn't sit and talk with Groenendaal or anybody... but I got to go home earlier. I was also lucky that I had to go right away, so I didn't have to wait at all.

We got home and it was dark and wet so I tried to wash everything as fast as I could. Then I came in, ate some dinner, sat around for a bit, and then we went out to a pub around the corner for our New Years! It was pretty cool. I'll put some pictures up later. I had a Kriek and a Jenever. The Jenever was very interesting, but I can say I've tried it now!

I think that's all the really interesting stuff that's happened since my last post and I think Greg wants his computer back, so that's all for today.

Happy New Year, I think...

The celebrations in our house were cut short by the need to go bed and recover and get ready for the coming races.  I was asleep by 10:30 and I woke up at 9:00 this morning.  I was getting ready for the GP Sven Nys, with Molly taking my bag and spare bike and Greg was going to ride with me to the start so I didn't get lost (which I definitely would have, by the way).

The weather was pretty gross when we left and only got worse.  It was really really windy and pouring rain.  We took a few wrong turns and Greg was pretty mad, which he admitted to later.  I don't think I can thank him enough for sticking it out.  I was hurting and I was pretty darn sure I wasn't going to race, but we had to go and tell Molly so he didn't worry about me or anything.

We got there soon enough, but we couldn't find Molly for the life of us.  Oh well, home time it is.  The rain had stopped by this point and the course was going to be ridiculously muddy.  I wanted to race, but I couldn't find my bag and I was soaked and I had like 3 hours to wait, and then I would have had to ride home by myself (and probably would have gotten lost).

So we rode through Aarschot, which is really a beautiful place.  We found this huge, beautiful church, and rode through some pretty cool streets.  Unfortunately my camera was in my bag in Molly's car.  We found our way home, and with the bakery closed we were relegated to the bread machine (which is really cool, I'll get a picture later).

I jumped in the shower (which I haven't told you about yet, but is just a big bathtub, no curtain, and a showerhead to wash yourself off with.  It works but it's kind of uncomfortable.) and then I realized my towel was with my camera in Molly's car.  Dang!  So I had to use my dirty little towel from yesterday's race.

Now it's 1:30 and I'm dry and happy.  The sun is out and it's a beatiful race.  In an hour and a half I'm going to watch my race on tv.  Woohoo!!

And I thought I'd leave with part of today's Our Daily Bread
  • Many of our New Year’s resolutions may actually accelerate our pace of life instead of helping us to slow down. In a quest for greater productivity and efficiency, we overschedule our days, then rush through meals, drive impatiently, and wonder why the joy of living eludes us.

Carol Odell, who writes a business advice column, says that slowing down can positively affect our lives at work and at home. She believes that rushing can cloud our judgment and cause us to overlook important things and valuable people. Carol encourages everyone to slow down, and even suggests the radical idea of welcoming red traffic lights and using the waiting time to meditate.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Deigem Superprestige:

Well I had my first experience in a Euro cyclocross race.  It was pretty cool and another day at the office.  I was pretty much  at the back for the start.  As expected and I think it's a good idea as that's pretty much where I finished.  I had a decent start, but it wasn't like the USGPs and I didn't make up a lot of spots.  I know I'm not aggressive enough and couldn't really squeeze myself in anywhere.  And there was a decent sized crash at the first corner.  I bypassed that, but was pretty scared.  Everyone was trying to organize themselves still and I was pretty sure I had forgotten how to ride my bike and I really didn't want to crash.  After about half a lap it settled down, but I still had a hard time for almost 2 laps trying to push really really hard.  I think my technical skills were lacking a little bit.  After 3 and 4 laps I really was able to step on it.  I think I just got comfortable on my bike and with the course.  I was pretty much sitting in the same spot chasing a small group and then one guy.  I eventually caught him and then another guy passed me.  And then with 3 laps to go, I could see Kyle about 200m in front of me at the pit.  That gave me a ton of motivation and I just started givin' er 110.  Not like I wasn't already, but... and I also knew Albert and Stybar were coming up behind me so I didn't want to get lapped.  I felt good on pretty much the whole course.  In the second half of the race though, my rear tire pressure was a little low and i couldn't take the paved corners 100%.  I felt good through the fast-ish deep-ish mud, but as the race wore on it got really thick and sticky.  I was weak on the long diesel sections, as can be expect because I am me.  Some of the technical stuff was really cool.  And don't worry Alberta, I haven't lost my barrier abilities, I think I even got some cheers a couple times... it was loud, but I have no idea what they were saying.  I think it was cheering.  And I think that's about all of the course, not much interesting once I was settled into my position, I was pretty much just riding by myself all the time.

And the amazing Jos drove me and Greg to the race in her wicked-awesome van.  Cool!  Lots of space to change and clean up and stuff.  And she was great at the race, took our stuff, took care of us.  And she knows Roger Hammond.  How cool is that?  Maybe I'm still a little kid...

There was a photo booth there that had an album up like 20 minutes after the race.  I looked, and there was four of me, a couple were good, but i figured since it was only 7 euros, I thought why not.  Maybe I'll send it home to make sure it doesn't get wrecked.  I took a picture of it and put in here.  It doesn't do it justice, but it's pretty cool.

I don't think I have anything else to say and this has been a decently long post, so I will let you go until tomorrow when I should have another race update.  Til then, keep the rubber side down.

Christmas and Europe

Things here are getting better and more comfortable all the time.  I feel more at home and happy to be here every day.  I think next week I'll be good as new.  I've had a few complications in my race planning, but I think things are coming through.  I'm probably racing the Diegem Superprestige on the 31, the GP Sven Nys on the 1, the GP Sint-Niklaas on the 2, and the Antwerpen Scheldecross on the 10, and the 2 world cups.  So I think that's pretty close to the actual plan.  I met Jos today, our host, and she is very nice and is probably going to drive Greg and i to a couple races.  I haven't really explored much.  There doesn't seem to be a whole lot nearby, and I don't want to venture too far off and get lost.

That leads to me to a description on Belgium on my first 2 rides.  I rode yesterday with Greg and Kyle and the roads here are nuts!  There are so many of them and they are all tiny and none of them are straight.  It's crazy!  Everybody seems to be good drivers/cyclists and just know what's going on.  If a whole bunch of North Americans cam over here at once they would all die.  It just seems more intuitive.  From what I've seen and heard (which isn't a whole lot) everything is way more relaxed and chill here.  I don't think many people talk on their cell phones and drive or get up at 7 to put their make-up on.  Maybe I just haven't seen that part, but I don't think it's here.  The towns also seem to run right into each.  If there were no town signs you wouldn't be able to differentiate them and even with signs it can be hard.  But it's cool, not like American cities running into each other where there's massive malls and building complexes, everything here just seems like an organized mess and is really spread.  Like somebody took a whole bunch of house and roads and threw them down like dice and just see where they land.  It's cool.  Here are some pics of my house and of what I've seen so far.

And I just wanted to say a few little things about Christmas!  It was great this year!  Every year my mom says I'm not getting anything, but every year my mom pulls through with some amazing gifts!  Thanks mom and dad and Carrie and Mike and everyone else.  I love you all.  I got a burr grinder, a body fat scale, a sweet backpack, an amazing knife (which I didn't get a chance to use, and nobody is allowed to use until I get back!), a sweet pro chef book, a picture of Carrie and me on her wedding, among other cool things.  And church on Christmas eve was great!  Everyone was giving me last hugs and goodbyes and congratulations.  I saw Ted for the first time in like a year and I can't say enough for everyone who had many many words of encouragement.  Let me tell you, those came in handy once I got here.  I also have some Christmas pics on here today.  But I think I've said everything and this has become a pretty long post.  The next one should be my first race update... can't wait!

Well, I'm in my third year of Phys Ed at the UofA now. I also race my bike lots. Road, Cyclo-cross, and a little track. I aspire to be a cyclist for my career, but I would like to fall back on Exercise Physiology. Right now I fund my endeavours, well, mostly from my parents, but I'm also a Barista at Westgate Starbuck's in E-town. Starbucks gone wild! Wooo! I'm a try-hard but have fun sitting around doing nothing.
